Tahoe Donner Protects Open Space

During the many years I lived in Tahoe Donner, one of my favorite spots was the Euer Valley, a pristine stretch of the High Sierra long owned by the family that bears its name. For many years, access to the valley floor was limited to the winter months, when the Tahoe Donner homeowner's association leased it for their cross country ski operations (38 miles of beautiful - and groomed - terrain). The Euers ran cattle in the valley during the summer, and bikes or joggers were not allowed. That changed in 2011, when Tahoe Donner purchased almost 500 acres of the valley for year-round use. And a good thing is about to get even better ...

Tahoe Donner is adding another 640 acres to this open space paradise with the purchase of Crabtree Canyon and the gateway to the north.

The surrounding Carpenter Valley, which has been privately owned since the mid-19th Century, is also expected to be purchased for open space by the Truckee Donner Land Trust next year, the association said in a press release.

"Working with the Truckee Donner Land Trust, Tahoe Donner’s General Plan Committee, management and staff were able to negotiate the Crabtree Canyon purchase for less than $800 per acre," Tahoe Donner said in a press release. "The Land Trust originally purchased this parcel for $2.4 million; our purchase price was $500,000, which equates to under $80 per Tahoe Donner member. Also, the funding for this purchase will require no special assessment to existing Tahoe Donner homeowners. It is covered by the development fund portion of the association’s existing budget, which is comprised of a percentage of each homeowner’s annual assessment."
