Live Where You Play
Tahoe Donner's Cross Country Center, voted one of the best cross country ski areas in the country, is a year-round destination for fun, exercise, or just the peaceful enjoyment of nature. I came to appreciate this area when I lived on Pinnacle Loop, where the hundreds of acres were just a short walk out my front door (Read more ...)

Winter & Summer Fun
What makes this area so unique is that it backs to hundreds of acres of open space in the Euer Valley, and beyond into Carpenter Valley and the pristine Frog Lake, which sits below the peaks of the Pacific Crest Trail. In the winter, Tahoe Donner grooms 38 miles of trails for Cross Country striding or skate skiing. And the views here are just breath-taking. A picture is worth a thousand words ... here's a screenshot of an iconic photo taken by Olof Carmel of the river running through the Euer Valley in winter:
It really is that beautiful! The Valley was homesteaded by a Swiss family in the 1800s, and when they announced in 2011 that they would no longer be running cattle there in the summer, Tahoe Donner purchased almost 500 acres of the valley to preserve it as permanent open space. The acquisition secured the future of Tahoe Donner's Cross Country winter operations, and also opened the valley to summer use (which had previously been banned on the private holding). It also inspired the Truckee Donner Land Trust to acquire adjacent parcels in the Carpenter Valley and beyond, greatly expanding the open space holdings in these pristine valleys.
Hiking & Horseback Riding
The centerpiece of the Cross Country Center is a Lodge with a restaurant (Alder Creek Cafe), bar, and ski rentals. In the summer, the center transitions from skiing to hiking and equestrian activities, with bike rentals, horseback riding lessons, and occasional concerts on the expansive patio overlooking a meadow.
The Tahoe Donner trail system offers connections to the Cross Country trail network from many locations along Skislope, Alder Creek Drive, Wolfgang Road and Pinnacle Loop (where I'm building a home for myself again). If you're fitness level allows it, you can literally spend the entire day exploring this region on foot, skis, horseback or mountain bike. Here, for example, is a trailhead off of Glacier Way that connects to both the Donner Lake overlook and the north of of the Cross Country Center near Sunrise Bowl (a popular spot for back country skiing) ..
